It's sickening but it strikes me as the same old same old sexist double standards. But inherent in it is the idea that female sexuality is harmless and guys just want it. Misogyny because I often hear male comedians talk about how men will do anything for pussy/to see boobs, and are ready to go at any moment, so on one hand it falls into the cheap comedy paradigm, but also it could potentially have been justified by some bastardized version of female sexual pride. I think a woman rubbing herself sexually assaulting dudes is a perverted combination of misogyny and maybe feminism gone wrong. ![]() There is also not very much education about female pleasure and orgasm- masturbation is often considered a 'guy thing' and it's seen as uncharacteristic for women- so a lot of feminist discourse centers on reclaiming female sexuality as something pleasurable, not just for reproduction, not something to be ashamed of. Women's sexuality is still often shamed, a la slut shaming and so on (a bro having sex with 5 chicks is lauded, a girl doing the same is a whore, etc). Is there someone behind the scenes arranging consent agreements with the audience or is she really just assaulting men under a flood of stage lights? I decided to post this thought to Reddit because no one seems to be talking about the problems with Bridget's act. It's almost some perverse role play reenacting the past. Why isn't the reverse true? I searched the internet and all I could find was praise of Bridget's ability to "reclaim her sexuality." Worse, she is a survivor of sexual assault (per her bio) who is now committing it regularly for "comedy." As a survivor myself, I really don't know how she can overcome that cognitive dissonance. If a male comic whipped out his penis, or rubbed his groin against a female audience member, people would be outraged. And yet this woman had been hired to perform on the same stage as Aziz Ansari and Amy Schumer, two people who through comedy are brilliantly taking down rape culture, racism, sexism and a host of other social issues. It was clear that all of Bridget's "comedy" would qualify as sexual assault. ![]() I was horrified and the people in my immediate vicinity seemed to be horrified as well. I would be able to tell you more, but I turned away at this point. She stands on top of them so their heads are under her dress. Bridget goes into the crowd and continues to belt out her songs, while rubbing her breasts in the faces of male audience members. This seemed a bit off but also not quite at the level of sex crime in my opinion (though legally it is a sex crime).Īnd then things escalate. It wasn't all that funny to me-I'm more into cultural criticism a la Aziz and Amy-but it wasn't offensive either. If you haven't seen Bridget's act, here's a quick overview (of what in my opinion is a painfully long 15 minutes): Bridget is a classically trained vocalist who sings rock ballads about her reproductive organs. I really wanted to like Bridget, because I like supporting female comics in general, but it seems her act was not so much comedy as a musical sexual assault. She was one of two women performing that night, the other being superstar Amy Schumer. So yesterday I saw Bridget Everett perform at the Oddball Comedy Fest in Mountain View.
